This week in the stock market
This week, the stock market took another wide swing. While it ended down 45 points on Friday, it was just this side of flat for the week, ending at 10,099.
The big news this week was the continuing saga of Greece. And then China weighed in, increasing the cash requirements for banks – China is trying to slow runaway growth in its housing and commodities markets. This is the second time in a month that China has increased its banks reserve requirements, and when China makes this sort of move, the rest of the world swoons.
Here are some smart questions you have to ask yourself about investing in today’s world:
- Can the worlds biggest economies (or those in the Euro-Union, like Greece, Ireland, Spain and Portugal) survive without having people spend in a bubble mentality?
- Do these countries have enough cash to service their debts?
- What happens when U.S. states (California, Illinois, New York, etc.) can’t pay their debts and wind up billions underwater? Will the Federal Government step forward to bail them out as the EU is bailing out its smaller members?
And then you have to ask yourself about jobs. As the Jobs Bill is being debated on Capitol Hill, and as Sen. Harry Reid is cutting it back (probably to boost his re-election bid rather than for doing anything good for the American people at large), what happens to housing and mortgages?
The number of loans going delinquent is increasing in speed. Almost twice as many loans are going delinquent, including a fair chunk that were just fine and dandy at the beginning of 2009.
What’s happening here? It’s clear that with some 15 million Americans unemployed for a very long period of time, unemployment insurance (if it hasn’t run out) isn’t really paying all the bills. If all of these mortgages go delinquent, it will send another shock wave through the mortgage/finance world. Banks will be underwater again – and this doesn’t even include the coming commercial real estate crisis.
The only thing you can be sure of – if you’re wondering how people are paying their mortgages and living their lives without having an income, you can rest easy (!!) knowing that they aren’t really.
Volatility and Investing in Today’s Markets
With this sort of volatility, it’s tough to know what to do when it comes to investing your money and planning for retirement. Join us for this special event, featuring some of the smartest investment professionals as we attempt to sort through what’s happening.
Will the economy move forward or will it fall back into recession?
Should you invest in bonds if interest rates are moving higher?
Will the stock market move forward or retest market lows?
Should you play it safer or take on more risk?
Together, we’ll explore this new world of investing. We’ll look at short-term and long-term investments, retirement savings and your child’s college education fund. We’ll look at stocks, bonds, ETFs, real estate investing and the biggest mistakes investors make.
So plan to join me on March 27, 2010 for my How To Invest In 2010.
