Discussing financial New Year’s resolutions for 2013 and the impact of the fiscal cliff on job advice and the ability to save money. Also a bit on the tragedy in Newtown and the Sandy Hook Elementary School. And as usual, providing personal finance advice, real estate advice and consumer advice on the Ilyce Glink Show on December 16, 2012 at 11:00am Eastern Time on WSB Radio.

I find myself drawn to all the coverage around Newtown, Connecticut and the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting this weekend and I’m just sick to my stomach. I’m sure you all feel the same way. It’s an incomprehensible tragedy just a few days before Christmas.

I look at the faces of those lovely little girls and boys and I think of my own children. We all have our opinions on guns and other politicized topics but I think we can all agree that this is devastating and we keep the grieving families in our hearts.

Where I’m going with this as relates to our show is that I wanted to talk about financial New Year’s resolutions. This tragedy has made me rethink how I want to reframe that discussion. There’s always the diet and the save money diet right? That’s been the case for the last 13 or 14 years that I’ve been doing this show and talking with people. These are the staples of New Year’s resolutions.

But something about what’s going on in Newtown makes me think we need something else. The looming fiscal cliff is terrifying. We’ve been in the middle of recession (or at least it feels that way to most of us) for five or six years. And here we go into the New Year.

I want 2013 to be meaningful, financially and emotionally. I want this to be a better year for all of us. Unemployment is down and that picture is a little brighter but we’re not there yet. The fiscal cliff uncertainty is not helping hiring and it’s tough to give people job advice until we know in which direction the country is headed.

The news can be depressing. But join me in making financial New Year’s Resolutions, and other types of promises to better ourselves and we might just see a more prosperous 2013 all around.
